What Else, Lord?

Teenage years are tough – for both the parents and the teen.  My mom (bless her heart) used to say that kids should be hidden away when they turn 13 until they became 20 because those were such turbulent times.  She had bad timing, too, because this was unfortunately uttered just as I entered my teens.  (I had an older sister; maybe she was preparing herself for Round Two).

In any case, I recall times in the summer when I would drive to the head of the lake, park the car and walk down a path that led me to McDonald Falls where I sat on a rock (too near the Falls!) and rested in the sound of the water as it flowed down from the mountains into the lake below.  I always found it so peaceful and refreshing.  In those days, that property was privately owned and I had permission to avail myself of its beauty whenever I wanted.  There were fewer visitors in the National Park in those days and virtually no one was on the trail or at the Falls when I was there.  Today I go there with my son every summer and reminisce about my many trips there as a teen, but now the Park owns the land and there are numerous visitors on the path and at the Falls.

I have thought so often about the fact that, as a young person (even having spent every summer at the lake), it never occurred to me that I might run into a bear.  How could it not?  These back woods are their territory!  But, I never gave it a thought.  I realize as an adult that God protected me from any scary and potentially life-threatening situation.  I was oblivious.  God was not.

So, Lord.  What else?  What else have you protected me from?  What other circumstances have I put myself in but You kept me safe?

This is no doubt true for all of us.  Yet, we are unaware of His protective hand…

“and He preserves the way of His godly ones.”  (Proverbs 2:8)

“The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever.”  (Psalm 121:8)

I can think of many a time now that you made me reminisce. God has always been there hasn’t He?

I don’t even I want to know of all the times God protected me. Knowing may cause me to fear. When we were on the road this summer, George and I witnessed many times God’s protection from auto accidents.

I’m grateful for things I don’t even know about that God has done for me.
