Under the Microscope

We often get annoyed by things we don’t understand.  It’s like some sort of contest that we just have to win so we fight and struggle to comprehend that which baffles us.  This is not always a bad thing, certainly, since man has overcome obstacles to progress and innovate and invent.

But, there is one (major) aspect we cannot seem to totally grasp – and that is God Himself.  We study, we read, we debate and consider what the Bible says, what pastors purport and preach.  We analyze and attempt to anthropomorphize the God of the universe.  But, to no avail.  He cannot be manipulated into someone we can fully comprehend.

Yet, we keep trying.  We attempt to put God under a microscope in order to parse every aspect of what little we know about His being.  We can’t actually SEE Him so we do our best to create a picture of Him in our minds because we feel the need to do so.  Without that, it’s just too murky and uncomfortable.  Can you imagine the various “pictures” of God in the minds of so many of us who see things so differently?

We are selfish.  God is selfless.  We are short-sighted.  God has a long-range view.  We are limited.  God is limitless.  We hold grudges.  God  forgives.  Just those few differences between us makes Him incomprehensible.

Is it wrong to try to grasp something of this amazing Creator, Sustainer and Savior?  Of course not!  We can keep learning and we can definitely be grateful for what we do know about Him.  But, let’s not forget who’s who.  He’s God – and we’re not.

“Where is the wise man?  Where is the scribe?  Where is the debater of this age?  Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?”  (1 Corinthians 1:20)

“Can you discover the depths of God?  Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?  They are as high as the heavens, what can you do?  (Job 11:7-8)

The best part… we may be unable to SEE Him… But, we can sense His precious presence always. I love that – THANKS, Teri!

Thx again Teri for the reminder of His awesome greatness! Who are mere mortals that He should think about them. Mankind that He should care for them? Psalm 8. But He does! Thankful!
