In the Book of Beginnings (Genesis), in chapter 11, we read a description of life sometime after the flood in the days of Noah. At that point everyone spoke the same language. Many were gathered on the plain of Shinar where they decided to reach heaven on their own by building a high tower in order to “make a name for ourselves” (Gen. 11:4). Everything was going along just fine until God had had enough of their self-exaltation and “confused the language of the whole earth” (v. 9). This brought the project to a screeching halt! Everyone dispersed, moving to where they could be understood.
This attempted structure was called the Tower of Babel and thus, we can easily see where the term “babbling” originated. Actually, this is what we see in our world today: a lot of babbling. In fact, with social media and the many outlets we have for expressing ourselves, we “babble on” (and on and on) which sounds very much like: Babylon.
Recognizing there are many interpretations of Scripture and prophecy, we can still take a look at Revelation 18 and see many similarities in the description of Babylon and our country today. I am not saying that the United States of America is what is discussed in Revelation (though some argue that it is). Some believe that it is the city of Bagdad in Iraq since it is that approximate location. But, if we look at this as a society and a mindset, then certainly the similarities are there. In Rev. 18, Babylon is destroyed (announced by an angel). But, the verses describe “her immorality” and the “merchants of the earth have become rich by the wealth of her sensuality” (v. 3). It continues that “she glorified herself and lived sensuously” (v. 7). The “merchants weep because no one buys their cargoes anymore…” (v. 11). Her judgment comes upon her in an hour, it goes on to say.
This depicts a society which focuses on self. A mindset that seeks to satisfy each and every whim. One which “babbles on” and accomplishes nothing but a further decline. Remember: Rome wasn’t defeated; it imploded. This appears to be our future. We are going in the wrong direction.
When GPS first came out, the “girl” in the box would tell us which way to go to get to our destination. And, what did we hear when we took a wrong turn? “Recalculating! Recalculating!” Then, she would help us get turned around and get on the right track.
It’s time for a re-do. No more babbling. A RE-do involves a REturn. That starts in our own hearts. Where have I wandered off in the wrong direction? Where have I contributed to the babbling that offers nothing? Each of us is responsible for our own choices, but we can also share with others – as God gives us opportunity. We aren’t doomed. We have a choice. And, we have a powerful weapon – prayer! Let us never forget that.
“If My people who are called by My Name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
Couldn’t agree with you more! Thank you Teri…..❤️
Babbling. That’s exactly what’s going on. Sad but not without hope!
Always hope. Thank you God for hearing our prayers.
Babble on . . . babbling on! It’s endless and hopeless – But, our God of Hope has sanctified us for His purpose. May we stop the babbling and express praise & glory to His name and behave in a way that proves what we believe! Thanks, Teri
A babbling brook with the sounds of nature can be very soothing. Babbling people with the sounds of their own voices, speaking words without merit, can be very disturbing. Let’s just listen to the sounds of God’s voice, which speaks truth to all, and then REturn to Him.
👍🏻👍🏻 Well said
