Only God

“The peace that passes all understanding” (Philippians 4:7) is often what encompasses me as I walk many mornings.  I try to get out literally at the crack of dawn as the chances are good I will be the only one out.  There is an amazing quiet and my time is spent with God in remarkable ways.

One morning I was brought to consider many of the remarkable things God has created which caused me to consider the existence of gravity (Yea, ok.  It’s not something we normally give a lot of thought to).  I personally marvel at how gravity keeps us on earth and manages to do so without crushing us.  So, I did a little research (which, of course, today involves a quick venture into the internet).  Wikipedia explained that the huge size of the earth “exerts a strong gravitational force on everything within its vicinity, including us.”  This tends to pull us toward the center (of the earth) but the ground itself exerts a counter force.  There is a pull of gravity which holds our atmosphere around the earth, extends into space but does “weaken” as it gets further from the earth.  It’s also the reason the earth stays in its particular orbit around the sun.  This may be more than you wanted to know, but it’s fascinating to think of all the innumerable details God has arranged that we may have life and a place for that life to take place.

God was the One who designed the pattern of the earth around the sun, that we might have both day and night.  He provided the moon and the stars to provide light even in the dark of night.  He breathed life into each of us and gives us a continual supply of air.  He made all of the basic tools that man has ultimately used to build all of the various inventions we have today.  Man doesn’t “make” a tree, or create air or establish gravity so that we don’t just drop off the face of the earth without anything to keep us in place.  Joyce Kilmer once wrote:  “Only God can make a tree”.   At some point, we have to accept and acknowledge:  ONLY GOD.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…”  (Genesis 1:1)

“He stretches out the north over the empty space and hangs the earth on nothing.”  (Job 26:7)
