Like so many things in our society, we often diminish true love by saying, “Love ya” to anyone and everyone in our path. But, do we? What exactly IS love? Is it something purely physical? Only emotional? Something we conjure up? And, how valuable is it?
Scripture uses several different words to describe love, but the most significant one uses the Greek word “agape” which is the highest level of love there is. It is unconditional: there is no expectation of anything in return. It accepts someone as he or she is. No plans to change that special someone. It is the willingness to give up everything – including one’s very life – for another. It’s the polar opposite of much of our world today: total unselfishness, selflessness.
The greatest example of this type of love is Jesus Himself who gave His life on our behalf. In spite of our selfishness, our rebellion, our ingratitude. “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 sums it up:
“Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”
Try making a chart with two columns: what it is and what it is not. You will have a description of the Lord God Himself. And, a model for us to follow. Love wants nothing but the best for someone else.
On Valentine’s Day, may we remember that, though candy and flowers are nice, commitment and devotion, understanding and acceptance are the true elements of love. God has shown us – and continues to show us – what love is. Jesus told us to “love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12). What better example is there?
“…God is love…We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:8, 19)
Amen! Oh that we would love like Jesus more and more! Thank you again Teri for always giving us truth to “chew” on!❤️❤️❤️
Amen! Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day, Teri!❤

Lovely truth … heart examination in progress!
I’m just reading this now as my early morning yesterday was spent on the road. But never too late. While yesterday was a little difficult this blog has put everything in the right perspective for me so thanks Teri. Lord give me your perspective in all things and your kind of agape love for others!
