Have You Laughed Lately?

Recently I had the opportunity to visit my son and his family in Texas.  What a huge blessing!  One night he and his wife and I sat at the table to play a game.  After a few minutes, for some reason (or, for no reason at all), my daughter-in-law and I got the giggles.  We could not stop laughing!  I can only imagine how Eric felt sitting between two hysterical women.  (He was a good sport).

Karl Barth once wrote:  “Laughter is the closest thing to God.”

Yet, we often act as if it were unspiritual…

Many years ago my dad was in the hospital.  They had initially given him a certain medication but decided to change to another.  The nurse told me to watch him as he slept to  make sure he didn’t stop breathing (I almost stopped breathing when she told me that).  Talk about nerve-racking!  His breathing was erratic, at best.  At times there were pauses.  Panic!  When should I call for help?  I was praying like a wild woman, as fast as the guy on the old FedEx commercial.  And, what happened next?  He began to snore!  I could only laugh as I realized that God, too, has a sense of humor!

My sister-in-law knew she had cancer and was dying…but she still found things to laugh about.

Try it.
