Destination, Not Distance

My beautiful niece is attending school to become a PA (Physician’s Assistant).  This course of study lasts a grueling 27 months where the student cannot have any outside employment or other activities.  It is total immersion in preparation to join the medical profession.  She is more than capable intellectually and is plugging away, but one of the most difficult parts is looking ahead at how much of the course is left.  It occurred to me that this same scenario faces many of us in one way or another.  We may be taking on a new job with many demands and expectations that never seem to be fulfilled.  We may be new parents and are struggling with what we must do daily (and nightly) for the next 20 years or so.  Maybe we are the “older set” and are wondering what life (whatever is left) may hold.  For all of us, the question boils down to:  how do we finish well?

If you want to lose 50#s, it can be discouraging when the pounds don’t just fall off as quickly as they seem to have piled on.  But, we’re  taking too big a bite (pardon the pun).  We want everything right now instead of plowing ahead one step at a time.  Last night in texting with my niece (whom I encourage to some extent because I am going to need her services one day soon!), the Lord caused me to tell her not to focus on the distance yet to go, but rather to focus on the destination.  This doesn’t mean the present time is miserable.  Far from it!  Live each moment.  But, look ahead to what will be there when you arrive.  The finished product, the raised children, a college degree or credentials.  And, for those of us in the final season of life:  moving on to the place Jesus promised He was preparing for us.

Look at the distance and get discouraged.  Look at the destination and get excited!

“…forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal…”   (Philippians 3:13b-14)

Jim Elliot said, “Wherever you are, be all there.” On the way, and when you get there. And the good news is that God will be with you.

I’m honored to be the focal point of your message Auntie! I’m not sure how worthy I am of this, but thank you for reminding me of what I’m doing this all for- to serve others. Your love and encouragement inspires me every single day.
