Love Is Forever

Many years ago Ryan O’Neil was in a movie (Love Story) in which his female co-star (Ali McGraw) uttered the words, “Love means never having to say you’re sorry”.  I’m not sure what planet she was living on, but that is so far from the truth, it’s pathetic.  Does this mean without an apology, the relationship is doomed?  I guess that depends on how often the issue comes up.  Some people over-compensate by apologizing all over the place which results in the apology meaning absolutely nothing after awhile.  Regret is not the same thing as repentance.  I might regret getting caught with my hand in the cookie jar, but there is no repentance unless I stop raiding the jar.

When it comes to true love, what are we willing to give up?  Is the person we love more important to us than ourselves?  Would we literally take a bullet for that person?  We probably can’t say that about too many people in our lives.  But, when you truly love someone, that love doesn’t stop when they’re being difficult, or when they do something horrible – or, even if they die.

Love isn’t like flipping  switch and turning it on or off.  It isn’t dependent on proper performance or the recipient’s perfection.  It just IS.  True love is both unconditional and unending.  Once found, however, it must be nurtured and valued.

Jesus modeled it for us when He accepted people as they were, and even died for everyone in spite of their choices or current actions.  He is our role model – a tough act to follow, but not impossible.  And, well worth it!

“But, I trust in your unfailing love…”  (Psalm 13:5)

“We love because He first loved us.”  (1 John 4:19)

Sorry … first it was Ali McGraw, not Farrah Faucett! I think Love means we MUST apologize and be willing to repent and change our ways! Thanks for the reminder to self-evaluate frequently!
