The Attention Span Of A Gnat

Years ago, anyone who misbehaved or refused to listen in class was sent to a corner and considered to be a troublemaker.  Nowadays, we’ve determined they have A.D.D. or A.D.H.D. and we put them on medication.

I think we all have a bit of A.D.D.  We can’t seem to focus or stay with something very long.  While a person across from us is speaking, we are already considering our response.  Everything now is cut down to sound bites and memes.  Anything beyond a paragraph is out.  We literally have the attention span of a gnat.

As believers, we go to God to confess our sins (which some prefer to call “mistakes” or “frailties”) but then we no sooner walk away from our admission and we’re back at it again.  “Second verse, same as the first…”

My prayer for quite awhile is that our country would go back to being a Christian nation.  Yet, I recall an episode following 9/11 when we seemed to be returning to God.  But, that didn’t appear to last very long.

When our nation’s capital was stormed on January 6, 2021, everyone pointed fingers at each other to affix blame.  My husband – an Air Force veteran – watched in horror and said succinctly, “I didn’t go to Viet Nam for this.”  Serve your country halfway around the world so people could invade their own capital???

Where is our ability to commit and stay with it?  Someone once said, “What you DO speaks so loudly, I can’t hear what you SAY.”

Yes, we all suffer from some A.D.D.   In our case, we don’t need medication to help us focus on what’s important.   We need a Savior.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him…”  (Revelation 3:20)

“…if My people who are called by My  name will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”  (2 Chronicles 7:14)

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”  (Psalm 33:12)
